What is Ayurveda Acupressure/Marma Therapy?

**All Ayurvedic Consultations and Coaching is available virtually via Skype or Zoom.**

Ayurvedic Acupressure or Marma Therapy is so much more than just acupressure. It is a gentle and effective balancing treatment that aims to harmonize energies of the physical body, mind, and spirit. Pressure or Marma points are important junctions in the body where soft (muscle, connective, vein) and/or hard tissues (bones, joints) intersect.

These points are also understood to be intersections where the vital life force energy, known as prana, is present. Here, prana can be influenced to create a positive effect on a particular part of the body or aspect of the mind. Think of a marma point as a switch where energy can be turned up or down depending on what’s needed. When the flow of energy is impaired or blocked, an imbalance develops that leads to physical or mental discomfort and disease. The following can impair energy flow:

  • Poor eating and sleeping habits
  • Consumption of old, non-nutritious foods
  • Emotional stress
  • Lack of exercise and exposure to natural elements
  • Toxins: environmental and cosmetic
  • Over use of electronics

Your body contains 108 marma points, or junctions of consciousness and matter. Tapping into this energy through marma massage can help reduce inflammation, increase energy, and improve your digestion.” The Chopra Center

Here are a few cases where Acupressure can be especially helpful:

  • Sore muscles and joints
  • Trouble with mental clarity or focus
  • Deficient or interrupted sleep
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Recovery from birth or illness
  • To accompany any detoxification program
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries (carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, “mother’s thumb” etc. that come from repetitive habits such as nursing or sitting at a computer)

What to expect during Ayurvedic Acupressure

New clients will begin with an initial consultation for acupressure, which can be done in person or over the phone. If you’re an ideal candidate for acupressure, the initial consultation will be followed by an acupressure session that may last 30 to 45 minutes.

First, your pulse is taken at the wrist for a reading of the current balance of energy. During the session, particular marma points of the head, face, arms, hands, legs, feet and back may be stimulated with gentle touch to achieve a therapeutic effect. Pure, food-grade oils and essential oils may be used on the marma points with your permission. You can remain clothed throughout the session with the exception of socks and shoes if we are working on feet.

Potential benefits include improved circulation and digestion, detoxification, better energy levels and mood, improved sleep and mental functioning, boosts immunity and slows the aging process. It can release blocked stagnant energy, toxic emotions, memories and EMF toxins. Releases neuro-chemicals including serotonin and melatonin. Balances all doshas and harmonizes chakras (energy centers).
